Lubricants

Regardless of the application, reliability of the apparatus is dependent upon proper lubrication. The primary function of lubrication is to provide a thin film of oil in between the rolling elements and the bearing raceways. This film reduces friction between the sliding surfaces and prevents metal to metal contact while protecting the components from oxidization and corrosion. Over 50 % of all bearing failures are attributed to lubrication. Contamination of the lubricant is the leading cause. Over lubricating can be as problematic as under lubricating, both leading to premature failure. Avoid mixing lubricants as compatible issues can be very challenging.
