O-Rings perform as a seal through mechanical deformation of an elastomeric compound. The flexible rubber compound conforms to the shape of the mating
surfaces which blocks the passage of liquids and gases. When the compression of the O-Ring material is increased so too does its ability to make a tighter seal.
Some of the more commonly used elastomers are Buna-N, Viton, Neoprene and Silicone. These compounds are chosen for a specific application based on the mechanical and physical properties taking into consideration the operating temperatures, shaft speed as well as to the chemical influence of the medium.
